One of Minnesota’s most popular fishing destinations is missing its fishermen. The DNR says June was very slow on Lake Mille Lacs, with anglers spending half the time fishing that they did the previous year.

DNR Steps Up Fight Against Zebra Mussels

It’s the first day of a new job for Erik Ziegler. The Vermillion College student is on summer break, and working the front line of Minnesota’s war against zebra mussels. “If you sell a boat, a trailer or a lift and someone else buys it, I mean, [zebra mussels] can even be transported to another lake and it will just spread like wildfire,” Ziegler said.

Lake Mille Lacs Residents Dealing With Walls Of Ice

Head north of the Twin Cities along the shores of Lake Mille Lacs and you’ll find some residents dealing with large piles of ice being blown onto shore – and creeping towards their homes. With the month of May just two days away, trees should be showing some signs of spring, but trees along Lake Mille Lacs are showing signs of distress. They’re split and shoved by creeping ice.

Goin’ To The (Frozen) Lake: Frank & Chris Visit Mille Lacs

On Jan. 16, the duo headed out to Lake Mille Lacs, which is about 100 miles north of the Twin Cities. After the drive up, the two found some shelter from the windy weather at Johnson’s Portside Bait and Liquor store. They said the wind was so strong you couldn’t even see the fish houses that dot the ice on Minnesota’s second largest in-land lake.

Good Question: Does Insurance Cover Freak Weather Damage?

The cell phone video of a wall of ice marching towards Izatys Resort on Lake Mille Lacs is amazing. The slow-motion avalanche pierced the wall of at least one home. When the weather gets crazy, does insurance cover it? Much like the winds of a tornado tossing objects into homes and causing damage, the winds from the ice tsunami destroyed at least two boat houses, and sent ice inside at least one resort condo along Lake Mille Lacs.
