The winter sports season is over, and the spring sports season is in a fight with Mother Nature.
Apple Valley’s Tyus Jones and Lakeville North’s J.P. Macura are the co-winners of the 2014 Minnesota Associated Press Player of the Year award for boys basketball.
J.P. Macura went out a winner with Lakeville North. Macura scored 43 points and Connor Flack’s bank shot in the lane gave the Panthers the lead for good with 18 seconds left in an 84-82 victory over Hopkins in the Class 4A boys state championship game Saturday night, the program’s first title. “I wanted to leave everything out on the floor,” said Macura, who will play at Xavier University next season.
High school basketball fans witnessed March Madness at Target Center Thursday night as a pair of state tournament semifinal games ended with buzzer-beating shots that went in. Hopkins and Lakeville North will meet for the Class 4A state championship Saturday night, but both teams needed shots to go in as time expired to get there.
Early in the third period of Saturday night’s Class 2A championship game at the Xcel Energy Center, the Edina student section started chanting, “This is our house.” That’ll hold true for at least another year.
Last year, the Lakeville North boys hockey team advanced to the state tournament, only to lose in convincing fashion to Edina in the first round. This year, they got over the hump with an overtime win over Roseau in round one. And a big part of this year’s success is coming from senior forward Tristen Hazlett – this week’s Aspire Athlete of the Week.
