Minnesota Officials React To SCOTUS Marriage Equality Ruling

The Supreme Court of the United States ruled Friday that same-sex couples have the right to marry in all 50 states. While Minnesota was an early adopter of marriage equality, that didn’t stop them from celebrating and voicing their support of the ruling.

The Minneapolis Police Department is the latest Minnesota law enforcement agency to begin equipping officers with body cameras. As part of a pilot program being launched Friday, 36 officers will wear the cameras for six to nine months to test their effectiveness.

Minneapolis To Increase Police Presence Through Labor Day

The mayor and police chief of Minneapolis announced Wednesday that the Minneapolis Police Department will be increasing police resources in north Minneapolis as well as crime hot spots in south Minneapolis. The police department will be approving overtime for four more officers and one more supervisor in north Minneapolis — along with four more officers in south Minneapolis – from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. every day through Labor Day.

Violent crime is up by 4 percent in Minneapolis but overall it remains at one of the lowest levels in 30 years. Homicide is down from last year and so is rape.
