Bemidji Woman Found Incompetent In Freezing Death

A Bemidji woman who allegedly allowed her 6-year-old cousin to freeze to death has been found incompetent to stand trial. Twenty-two-year-old Rachel Stacey Downer was charged with manslaughter in the death of Mercedes Mayfield.

Woman Charged With Manslaughter In Bemidji Girl’s Death

Rachel Downer was charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection with the Feb. 27 incident, where 6-year-old Mercedes Mayfield was left out in the bitter cold outside a Bemidji apartment and later found dead.

Attorney Weighs In On Arrest In Death Of Bemidji Girl

Charges are expected Monday against a 22-year-old woman in Bemidji, who was arrested in connection with the death of her 6-year-old cousin. Rachel Downer is facing charges of manslaughter and felony neglect of a child in the death of Mercedes Mayfield. Downer was watching her cousin last month when the little girl was found frozen to death at the entrance of her apartment. The temperature at the time was minus 27.

Cousin Arrested In Exposure Death Of Bemidji 6-Year-Old

Police in Bemidji have arrested the cousin of the 6-year-old girl who died after being exposed to subzero cold late last month. Officers arrested 22-year-old Rachel Downer in connection to the exposure death of Mercedes Mayfield on Feb. 27, the Bemidji Police Department says.
