The St. Thomas men’s basketball team savored the moment after beating Bethel 66-63 in the title game of the MIAC Playoffs Sunday, but there wasn’t a ton of time to celebrate after cutting down the nets.
Most college basketball teams are fighting for their playoff lives at this point in the season. But for John Tauer and St. Thomas, this week is business as usual. When a team wins as many MIAC titles as Tauer’s Tommies have, expectations are higher than just hoping for a chance. You’re expected to win.
The St. Thomas men’s basketball team had a big day in a lot of ways Sunday, beating Augsburg 92-65 to win the MIAC Playoff title. It’s the third straight championship for the Tommies (26-1), who enter the NCAA Division III Tournament as the nation’s No. 1-ranked team.
The St. Thomas men’s basketball team welcomed a week off from game action, especially since winning a MIAC regular season title is what got them there. Now St. Thomas hosts Carleton (16-10) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the MIAC Playoff semifinals.
There is still plenty to be decided in the MIAC men’s basketball season, but St. Thomas knows one thing: They’re in the playoffs.
