For most people going fishing this weekend, their first stop will be at a bait shop. You can get minnows and nightcrawlers at any one of them. But we wanted to find the Best of Minnesota.
Another winter storm would be the last thing the state’s fishing industry needs. Many bait shops and resort owners say business was down this winter because it was simply too cold to be on the ice.
Authorities in Codington County have identified a 56-year-old man who drowned while netting minnows in a slough near Henry.
KXLG radio reports that the victim has been identified as Dean Carl Mertins of Waterville, Minn.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is investigating a fish kill in Renville County. Authorities were called Wednesday night about dead fish in West Fork Beaver Creek south of Danube. Observers found dead northern pike, smallmouth bass, suckers and minnows in the creek.
Ask anglers where minnows come from and they’ll likely say the bait store. But odds are the bait in your bucket went through Ron Meuwissen’s pole barn. “They’re gonna work hard or die trying,” Meuwissen said. “That’s what they say in the bait store.” Ron’s dad started Ken’s Bait Service back in 1950. It’s been supplying bait stores ever since.
