A week that the City of Minneapolis spent years preparing for has come and gone. Baseball fans from the Twin Cities and all throughout the country hit downtown Minneapolis for All-Star Week. There were a lot of great moments throughout the week, and here are our five favorites.
We’ve had nearly a week of activities in Minneapolis leading up to Tuesday night’s All-Star Game at Target Field. Things wrapped up late and many bar patrons stayed out through the night to take advantage of the 4 a.m. bar close downtown.
Since the Home Run Derby started late, it ended late and fireworks from an All-Star Gala didn’t go off until after midnight. The fireworks were near the Mill City Museum in downtown Minneapolis, and they woke up many people.
It’s hard to blame Neil Johnson, a retired high school teacher from Shakopee, if he’s a little numb and starry-eyed this week. Johnson is one of 30 educators from around the country who were chosen by Major League Baseball as “All-Star Teachers.”
Seattle’s Felix Hernandez will start Tuesday night’s All-Star game for the American League and Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals will open for the National League.
Frank Thomas, otherwise known as the “The Big Hurt” is in town for the All-Star game on behalf of the Gillette Home Run Derby. He remembers playing in past All-Star games, and the first Home Run Derby in Minneapolis in 1985.
Even with more than 90 losses for three straight seasons, the Minnesota Twins have averaged more than 30,000 fans a game since Target Field opened in 2010. The ballpark itself is clearly part of the draw. “I love the architecture,” Jessi Oeltjen of Spring Valley said. “I’m a design buff, so just the architecture, the design, the layout. Once you get inside, there is not a bad seat in the house.”
Baseball fans hoping to be overwhelmed by memorabilia headed to the MLB All-Star Game FanFest, which opened Friday morning at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The doors opened at 9 a.m. The first day’s focus is on kids, with the first thousand kids through the door getting a free T.C. Bear bobblehead.
Baseball players know the difference between a hit and an error. The trouble is, their opinion doesn’t count in the score book. Former Twins slugger David “Big Papi” Ortiz has had his problems with the scorekeeper in Fenway Park.

Minnesota fans who were hoping to get Justin Morneau back in action at Target Field during next week’s All-Star Game fell short in their efforts. On Thursday, the MLB announced that Morneau would not be joining the roster of players for next Tuesday’s game.

As the All-Star Game gets closer, Minneapolis’ twin city, St. Paul, is getting into the action. Surrounded by school children, the Minnesota Twins unveiled new All-Star lineup of jersey-wearing Peanuts characters suited up for the midsummer classic. St. Paul’s native M&M boys, Paul Molitor and Joe Mauer – both All-Star Ambassadors – were there to welcome two other St. Paul icons into the All-Star lineup: Snoopy and Charlie Brown.
The Minnesota House has passed a bill permitting later bar hours during baseball’s All-Star Game, allowing continuation of beer sales at University of Minnesota football games and granting other liquor licenses around the state.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota says they have filed a suit against the City of Minneapolis because of their establishment of a “clean zone” during the MLB All-Star Game this summer. The ACLU said their suit was filed on behalf of members of the One Day in July Street Festival Committee.
Former Minnesota manager Tom Kelly and Twins Hall of Famer Bert Blyleven have been picked to manage in the All-Star Futures game at Target Field on July 13. Kelly led the Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991.
