The Minnesota State High School League has changed the rules for football practice. The changes are not unique to Minnesota. High school leagues across the country are taking steps to limit the amount of contact players have during practice.
In high school sports, the recruiting pitches are normally reserved for the athletes. But the Minnesota State High School League is launching one towards referees. “Not only do we seem to never have enough, but we’ve also noticed that the officials are getting older.”

It’s state tournament time in Minnesota, and it will cost more for some schools to make the trip this year. The Minnesota State High School League has warned schools to expect smaller reimbursement checks at the end of the school year. Mayer Lutheran may only be home to 180 students, but on Friday nearly all of them made the 45-mile trip to St. Paul to see their team compete on the volleyball court.
The Minnesota State High School League voted to postpone making a decision on the league’s proposed policy about transgender students who want to play on athletic teams. As WCCO’s Bill Hudson reported, the board wanted the currently written policy to move forward, but also to refine it before it becomes fully implemented.

Believe it or not, high school football season is already here for many programs. The official start of practice is a week away, but 22 schools get an extra week of practice because they play their first game a week early, on Aug. 23. It’s called “Zero Week,” and Edina coach Reed Boltmann says it’s a good fit for his team.
