DNA Helps Crack 1998 Mpls. Double Murder Case

When 18-year-old Carrie Richter and 20-year-old Dustin Baity didn’t show up for a gathering on Christmas Day 1998, their families grew suspicious. The couple was later found strangled and stabbed in the northeast Minneapolis apartment they shared. “Homicides are never over and DNA is the great tool of investigators and prosecutors,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

Mpls. Bridge Closed Due To Load-Limit Violations

A Minneapolis bridge is temporarily closed to traffic due to violations of a recent load limit. City officials say the 89-year-old St. Anthony Parkway Bridge in northeast Minneapolis was restricted to a three-ton load limit after recent inspections. But people have noticed larger vehicles still crossing the bridge, which triggered the closure.

Two women were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after being stabbed during an attempted robbery in northeast Minneapolis early Monday morning, according to police. NE Mpls. Bridge Snares 3rd Truck In Weeks

A railroad bridge in northeast Minneapolis has trapped another semi-trailer truck under its steel girders. Dan Karst and his wife Linda run a recycling business near Columbia Parkway and 5th Street Northeast, just up the road from a steel railroad bridge where traffic flows underneath. That’s unless the passing vehicle is higher than 12 feet 2 inches in height.

Cold Snap Has Chilling Impact On Economy

It’s a busy Friday afternoon at Parc Boutique in northeast Minneapolis. Racks full of women’s fashions greet the customers. But Parc’s owner, Thao Nguyen, says the recent cold snap has hurt her in-store sales. “It’s harder for people to come into the shop,” Nguyen said. Just like how tornadoes and hurricanes disrupt economic activity, there is also a steep cost to our cold weather. The lower the temperature drops, the fewer of us venture outside to shop, dine and recreate.

A carbon monoxide leak forced several families out of a northeast Minneapolis apartment building. Ten people went to the hospital with symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. No one is in serious or critical condition.

Gunfire Exchanged During US Marshal Chase In NE Mpls.

An attempt by the U.S. Marshal Service to execute an arrest warrant led to a car chase and an exchange of gunfire on a busy northeast Minneapolis street Wednesday afternoon. According to Minneapolis Police, the U.S. Marshal Service was executing the warrant near 13th Avenue and Grand Street Northeast when the suspect fled in an SUV. Authorities attempted to stop the suspect four blocks away on 16th Avenue and Marshall Street when gunfire was exchanged. No one was struck, and the suspect fled again.

Authorities said a family is displaced and a firefighter suffered minor injuries in an early-morning house fire in northeast Minneapolis. The Minneapolis Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at about 5:35 a.m. Saturday to an occupied duplex on the 2300 block of Johnson Street NE.
