DNR To Auction Northern Minnesota Land Oct. 9

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is holding a land auction on Oct. 9. The DNR says plans to offer 30 parcels, all located in northern Minnesota. The parcels range in size from a half acre to 102 acres and offer opportunities for hunting and recreation, as well as cabin and residential development along prime lakeshore.

A 60-year-old man died while trying to rescue some children from a northern Minnesota lake. The man jumped from his paddle boat into Lake Nichols in Canyon Friday afternoon, but never resurfaced.

Sandbagging Under Way On Lake Kabetogama

Authorities say a major sandbagging operation is under way on Lake Kabetogama (kab-uh-TOH’-gah-muh) in far northern Minnesota.

The director of homeland security and emergency management for the St. Louis County sheriff’s office, Steve Steblay (steb-LYE’), says the lake level rose sharply over the weekend. He says crews are sandbagging homes, resorts and roads to protect them. He says a large percentage of the resort and private docks and shoreline structures such as boathouses on Kabetogama are gone or have been destroyed.

Minnesota Activates Emergency Operations Center

Authorities have activated the State Emergency Operations Center to help communities in southwestern and northern Minnesota respond to damage from recent severe storms. The announcement says it’s just a partial activation that requires officials from various agencies to determine whether state resources are needed for the recovery effort. It says no local officials have requested state resources so far.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has canceled a missing person alert after two sisters taken from a Florida home by their father were located. On Thursday, officers with Citrus County in Florida reported that the two girls and their father had been located in Montana.
