Online Voter Registration
Minnesota lawmakers are hoping to minimize any lapse in the state’s online voter registration system. A judge ruled Monday that the portal be shut off because Secretary of State Mark Ritchie lacked the power to set it up unilaterally.
Republicans asked a Minnesota court to block a new online voter registration system Monday, saying it was illegally created by the state’s Democratic elections chief. Four GOP lawmakers and a pair of conservative groups filed a lawsuit seeking to suspend the Web-based system pending legislative action next year.
Three Republican legislators have met with Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie over their belief he overstepped his authority by implementing an online voter registration system. Senate Minority Leader David Hann, Sen. Scott Newman and Rep. Tim Sanders pressed Ritchie to suspend the site until the Legislature can formally weigh in.
Gov. Mark Dayton says he supports letting Minnesota voters register online, but believes Secretary of State Mark Ritchie should have had the Legislature’s OK before implementing the system.
