The winter months bring many snowmobilers, ice anglers and other winter sports enthusiasts to the St. Croix River. But this year, they’re finding that there’s one area that’s off limits. For Guthrie Pritchard, the icy surface of the St. Croix River creates the perfect terrain for four wheels and a sled. “It’s fun and I can pull my friends around, and I can throw myself off and wipe out,” Pritchard said.
On Saturday, Minnesotans will launch their boats in search of open water for the annual fishing opener.
While it’s hard not to notice, and enjoy, the fact that temperatures are climbing, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind you that the ice is thinning on area lakes.
The Minnesota State Patrol identified Eileen Johnson, 87, of Pelican Rapids, Minn., as the victim who drowned after a vehicle went off the road and into open water in northwestern Minnesota Friday night.
