Goin’ To The Lake: Mike & Liz Visit Park Rapids (Day 1)

WCCO’s summer road trip continued Thursday with Mike Binkley and Liz Collin, who are Park Rapids, Minn. The city is about three-and-a-half hours northwest of the Twin Cities.They found the Mississippi River’s headwaters at Itasca State Park. Countless visitors have stood right at the beginning of the Mississippi River’s 2,552-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. This is one of the must-see stops if you’re visiting Park Rapids.

Park Rapids Family Questions Safety of Ambulance After Address Mix-Up

After a mix-up in northern Minnesota, a family is questioning the safety of its ambulance service. When Brenda Sordahl’s grandson needed help, the ambulance crew went to the wrong address in Park Rapids. The Sordahl’s stay focused on the things Blake can do, rather than what he can’t.

Menahga Man Indicted In Choking Death Of Teen

A Menahga man was indicted Friday in the strangulation death of a 19-year-old woman in February, according to the Hubbard County Attorney’s Office. Harley David Leritz, 21, was indicted on first- and second-degree murder charges by a grand jury in the death of Kiela Knowles.

Minnesota Surgeon Arrested In North Dakota

A sheriff in Park Rapids says a surgeon accused of choking his foster son by stuffing a latex glove down his throat has been arrested in North Dakota. Hubbard County, Minnesota, Sheriff Cory Aukes tells WDAY-TV that 50-year-old Dennis James Sullivan Jr., of Benedict, was arrested Tuesday and will be returned to Minnesota by Monday.

Man Plans To Plead Guilty In Synthetic Drug Case

A Texas man says he will plead guilty in a wide-ranging investigation into the synthetic drug deaths of two teens in North Dakota and Minnesota. John Polinski, of Houston, is charged in federal court with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in serious bodily injury and death.

Man Who Made Drugs That Killed 2 Teens Sentenced

A North Dakota man who admitted to cooking up synthetic drugs that led to the overdose deaths of two teens has been sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison. Twenty-two-year-old Andrew Spofford, of Grand Forks, is the 12th person sentenced in the wide-ranging conspiracy. His sentence is the longest by five years. Spofford pleaded guilty in October to five counts, including conspiracy to distribute controlled substances resulting in serious bodily injury and death.

Wild Fires Rage In Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin

Firefighters in Minnesota and Wisconsin are battling several wildfires Wednesday that are taking over towns and destroying structures. As of Tuesday night, at least 25 wildfires had broken out in Minnesota Some of the biggest are in Red Lake, Park Rapids, Menagha and across the border in Wisconsin.

Minn. National Guard Helping To Fight Wildfire

Crews from the Minnesota National Guard are helping to suppress a wildfire near the northwestern Minnesota town of Menahga. Army Maj. Bruce A. Kraemer says 22 soldiers are on active duty Wednesday to help fight the fire, including air crews and support teams.

Dayton Snags Walleye On Minnesota Fishing Opener

Colder weather and ice, may have kept some from taking part in the fishing opener, but not Gov. Mark Dayton. He hit Fish Hook Lake Saturday morning in Park Rapids for the 66th annual fishing opener. He caught a nice-sized walleye less than a half hour after midnight Saturday morning.
