Paul Bunyan’s Axe
Dick from Stillwater asked: When was the last time the Gophers had possession of the Pig, Jug and Axe? Earlier this season, Minnesota beat Michigan to take the Little Brown Jug and Iowa for Floyd of Rosedale. If the Gophers beat the Badgers on Saturday, they will also be in possession of Paul Bunyan’s Axe. The last time that happened was 1967.
Before the season, only the most optimistic Minnesota fans would have thought their Gophers would have something more tangible than Paul Bunyan’s Axe at stake when it was time to play Wisconsin.
James White rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown and No. 16 Wisconsin beat Minnesota for the 10th straight time in a 20-7 victory on Saturday. Jared Abbrederis had seven catches for 67 yards and a touchdown and Chris Borland recovered two fumbles and forced one to tie the NCAA record for career fumbles caused. After the game, the Badgers (9-2, 6-1 Big Ten) hoisted Paul Bunyan’s Axe and used it to chop the Gophers goal post when the time ran out.
One of the nation’s longest-running rivalries hasn’t been a real rivalry for quite a while. Wisconsin has beaten Minnesota nine straight times, keeping Paul Bunyan’s Axe in Madison for what seems like an eternity to Golden Gophers fans.
Minnesota won’t play in a bowl game this season. The Gophers still have plenty of motivation this week against bitter border rival Wisconsin.
