The 9th annual “Tee it Up for the Troops” event brought out more than 1,000 golfers to the Mendakota Country Club in Mendota Heights Friday. The event allowed more than 100 veterans and Purple Heart recipients to golf for free in a show of appreciation for their service. The first swing on the tee box marks the start of an 18-hole challenge. Mike Reeder, a Vietnam War veteran who is visiting from Nashville, Tenn., had nothing but confidence as he began his game.
Tom Pernice Jr. birdied the final two holes Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Jeff Sluman and Corey Pavin in the 3M Championship. Pernice finished with a 4-under 68 and had a 17-under 199 total at the TPC Twin Cities for his second career Champions Tour victory. He also has two PGA Tour victories. Sluman closed with a 62, and Pavin had a 66.
Tom Pernice Jr. moved into position Saturday for his second Champions Tour title, shooting a 7-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead over Tom Kite in the 3M Championship. Pernice had a 13-under 131 total at TPC Twin Cities after opening with a 66. The two-time PGA Tour winner had four straight birdies on the front nine, and added two more on Nos. 10 and 12. After making a 40-foot bogey putt on the 14th hole, he birdied Nos. 15 and 18. The 53-year-old Pernice, playing in the tournament for the first time, on the 2009 SAS Championship for his lone senior title.
