Dot Harris is the director of the office of Economic Impact and Diversity for the Obama administration. She’s in Minneapolis to speak on behalf of STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics eduation – and she’s trying to get students to think about entering the field of science.
College board officials announced this week that an update to the SAT test is needed to make the exam more representative of what high school students study in class. The changes don’t go into effect until 2016, which means this year’s ninth graders will be the first to take it in their junior year. It’s a tough test that creates anxiety, and one that requires practice and sometimes even a tutor.
The business practices at some for-profit schools are under the microscope in Minnesota and across the country. The Department of Education says there are pricey post-secondary schools that leave students with more debt than public colleges and less of a chance of graduating.
