Minn. Farmer’s Turkeys Are White-House Bound

Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away, and a northern Minnesota farmer will be in the holiday spotlight. John Burkel of Badger will be presenting his turkeys to President Obama at the White House. Burkel raises 70,000 turkeys a year. He says he’s picked out a handful of his best, and is getting them ready in a heated garden shed for their national debut. Only two of the turkeys will make the trip to the White House, and they’ll be pardoned, not served.

Good Question: Why Does The U.S. Spy On Its Allies?

New details surfaced over the weekend about the United States spying on several world leaders, including tapping the personal cell phone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Now, new information about spying on people and political officials in France, Mexico and Spain has emerged as well. It’s angered many in those countries. Some have even threatened continued cooperation with the U.S. “It’s totally unacceptable. This undermines the trust and this can harm our friendship,” said Guido Westerwelle, Germany’s foreign minister.

Klobuchar Working With GOP Moderates To End Shutdown

A Minnesota senator is one of the key players hammering out a deal that could end the federal government shutdown. Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar is helping write a compromised version of a plan drafted by Republican Senator Susan Collins and credited GOP moderates. “We are friends,” Klobuchar said. “Senate Republicans really came to the fore, more moderates, saying ‘We want to work on a compromise,’ and that’s exactly what’s happening today in the Senate.”

Esme’s Blog: The Shutdown Blame Game

Last time the government shut down in 1995-96, Republicans were blamed and paid a heavy price. They lost seats in both the House and Senate, and Presidential candidate Bob Dole went down in defeat to President Clinton.
