Talking Points: U.S. Questions How To Respond To Rebel Advances In Iraq

Fighting continues in Iraq with government forces continuing to try and hold off the advances of Sunni militants. The appearance this weekend of the militant spiritual leader Abu Bakr al – Baghdadi at a mosque in Mosul, despite a $10 million U.S. bounty on his head, is seen as a further sign of how emboldened the rebels have become. Questions are also growing over whether the U.S. should back an effort to replace the current president of Iraq, Nouri Al-Maliki.

U.S. Supreme Exempts Businesses From Contraception Mandate

A divided Supreme Court ruled Monday that some companies with religious objections can avoid the contraceptives requirement in President Obama’s health care overhaul, the first time the high court has declared that businesses can hold religious views under federal law.

Beginning at noon Wednesday single tickets will be available first-come, first-served for folks who want to see the President on his second visit of the year to the Twin Cities. President Obama will hold a town hall Thursday at Minnehaha Park before attending a private fundraiser in the evening.

In a new video posted online from the White House, the president says he was struck by a letter from a woman named Rebekah. MN Veteran Prepares To Return To Iraq

In Iraq, Sunni militants continue pushing towards Baghdad. The militants have released video reportedly showing the moments before fighters executed Shiites serving in the Iraqi Army. President Obama is sending 275 troops to Iraq to protect U.S. personnel and the American Embassy, but some lawmakers want the president to quickly provide a plan to address the threat.

Punch Pizza Inspires Small Business Owner To Raise Wages

A Twin Cities pizza chain is getting national attention once again for leading the way with higher employee wages. “Hi, everybody.  In my state of the union address, I talked about pizza.  More specifically, I talked about a pizza chain in Minneapolis – Punch Pizza – whose owner, John Soranno, made the business decision to give his employees a raise to ten bucks an hour,” President Obama said in his weekly address.
