Rachel Mairose started Secondhand Hounds in 2009. “So far we’ve adopted almost 8,000 dogs out since 2009,” Mairose said.
Older, ailing dogs are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized at a shelter. This spring, non-profit Secondhand Hounds started a hospice program for those otherwise unwanted dogs.
The weather has been frigid to say the least, and it’s about to get worse. But the concern over the cold isn’t just about us, it’s about man’s best friend.
