One by one, Minnesota’s governors are leaving the Minnesota State Capitol, carefully carried away, and crated. As the Capitol begins a massive restoration, the building’s artwork is temporally heading to a new home.
A Minnesota Senate subcommittee on elections unanimously approved a bill Monday to reinforce a gift ban that was softened last year. The exception passed last spring allowed lawmakers to get lobbyist-purchased meals at receptions as long as all legislators were invited.
The State Capitol renovation is well underway. It’s a $273 million project that’s expected to take several years. And along the way, the renovation is revealing some oddball items that have been hidden for decades. They may not be all that historic, but they’re pretty cool. Much of the Capitol restoration is below ground, where workers are exposing original limestone foundation behind unnecessary walls that were added over the years.
Drawn from a quarry in north Georgia and then meticulously carved in Toronto, the gleaming white marble for the Minnesota Capitol exterior travels quite the path before crews restoring the building put the stone into place.
