It will be a busy traffic weekend in the metro. The Minnesota Twins are in town and the Gophers have a football game at TCF Bank Stadium Saturday afternoon. But the biggest traffic headache is going to be at Interstate 494 and Cedar Avenue.
A heads up if you’re heading down Interstate 35W in the south metro, you’ll need to take a detour. MnDOT has closed the southbound lanes between Interstate 494 and 94th Street in Bloomington, Minn.
It’s a big weekend coming up for downtown. The All-Star Game FanFest, a five-day festival, begins at the Convention Center open at 9 a.m. Friday. Friday night, thousands more people will head to downtown Minneapolis for the Basilica Block Party. It’s a two-day concert at the Basilica of St. Mary.
President Obama’s visit to a popular Minneapolis park Thursday will cause several road closures and parking restrictions. The Minneapolis Park and Recreations Board says the president will visit Minnehaha Park for an event that’s closed to the public.
Numerous highways and bridges are closed across the state as cities continue to deal with flooding and damage from torrential rains. In the metro area, the Stillwater Lift Bridge remains closed to pedestrian, vehicle and water traffic as waters on the St. Croix rise.
Motorists in the Twin Cities metro area are being alerted to a major weekend closure coming to Minneapolis, Edina and Richfield. Both directions of Highway 62 will close between Highway 100 and Interstate 35W so crews can demolish the Xerxes Avenue bridge deck.
Drivers all around the metro area may encounter some delays and detours this weekend, and for St. Paul drivers, for the next couple of months. Beginning 10 p.m. Friday, both directions of I-35E will shut down between I-94 in St. Paul and Little Canada, Minn.
If you’re heading out Saturday morning, start planning your detour. Some big freeway closures will likely cause backups and headaches. In the New Brighton/Shoreview area, eastbound Interstate 694 between I-35W and Lexington Avenue is closed. And in Bloomington, I-494 eastbound is closed between Highway 100 and 35W.
If you have travel plans for Labor Day weekend, be prepared for a little traffic. MnDOT Director of Communications Kevin Gutknecht says there won’t be any construction going on, but the road work areas will still mean road closures and slower speed limits. “There are a number of work zones that folks may encounter during their holiday weekend travel,” Gutknecht said. “Work zones can still be dangerous places, so folks should slow down, take their time and proceed cautiously.”
Drivers traveling around the metro are having to give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations. Several of the major freeways in and around the Twin Cities are off limits until Monday’s morning rush hour.
A number of roads will be closing later this week as construction crews begin working on resurfacing projects around the Twin Cities. MnDOT says that the first of eight week’s worth of delays and detours will affect motorists using Highway 169.
Metro area motorists should get ready for some major delays getting to, or from, downtown Minneapolis this weekend, from any direction. Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will shut down sections of Interstates 35W and 94 for bridge work and other maintenance.
If you’re going to be driving around Minneapolis this weekend, prepare to sit in traffic and have plenty of patience as some major road closures will affect the area.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation is alerting Twin Cities motorists that there will be short-term lane closures along part of Interstate 94 starting on Thursday night.
Multiple lanes of Interstate 94 and ramps of Interstate 35E will close in the downtown St. Paul commons area Wednesday night for light-rail-related construction, the Department of Transportation says.
