Pothole season in Minnesota usually starts at the end of February, and that time has come. But as our winter has been mild, this year may not be as bad. MnDOT hopes our mild winter continues, because the less snow and ice, the more attention they can give to potholes.
Ever hear the saying there are two seasons in Minnesota? “Yes,” Marsha Johnston of Minneapolis said. “There’s winter and there’s road construction.” But over the past few decades there have been more road, ramp and bridge closures throughout the winter.
Minnesota has wrapped up its 2014 road construction season. The state Department of Transportation says major bridge construction, highway lane additions and road resurfacing were among the 308 projects underway during the season.
Drivers on Interstate 35E will experience some delays Monday night and early Tuesday morning, according to Minnesota Department of Transportation. Left and center lanes of I-35E will be closed in both directions beginning Monday night at 11 p.m.
St. Paul officials are laying out their plan to fix about half of the city’s “Terrible 20″ roads. Eleven roads will undergo maintenance beginning the week of Sept. 8, and the work is expected to run until mid-October.
If you’re heading out Saturday morning, start planning your detour. Some big freeway closures will likely cause backups and headaches. In the New Brighton/Shoreview area, eastbound Interstate 694 between I-35W and Lexington Avenue is closed. And in Bloomington, I-494 eastbound is closed between Highway 100 and 35W.
Authorities are searching for the suspect who allegedly hit a highway construction worker Wednesday night in New Brighton and then fled the scene. The Minnesota State Patrol said the worker, who was sawing concrete as part of the repair project, was struck at 9:50 p.m. on the eastbound lanes of I-694, west of the ramp from the interstate to Long Lake Road.
Penn Avenue in south Minneapolis is being rebuilt and widened, and the work is taking from May through October.
Motorists this weekend will experience delays one final time as a portion of Interstate 94 in the Twin Cities will be closed due to construction.
There could be some headaches for motorists heading home from work Tuesday night in the south metro. The southbound lanes of Highway 169 between Valley View Road and Interstate 494 will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday for a continuing construction project.
The drive along Interstate 35E in the southeastern metro will get a lot smoother starting Thursday.
