The University of Minnesota has issued a crime alert after an attempted armed robbery took place near the East Bank campus Thursday night. Police say the incident happened at about 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of Harvard Street Southeast and East River Road.
A 21-year-old Minneapolis man was sentenced Wednesday to more than eight years in prison for his part in two violent, gang-related crimes last fall, both filmed on cellphones. According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, Allen Derrell Gaines was convicted of one count of aiding and abetting aggravated robbery in two separate cases.

The robbery happened just after noon at Sterling Bank in Rice Lake, Wis., the local police department said. According to University officials, someone not affiliated with the U of M was walking near the intersection of Riverside Avenue and 20th Avenue South at about 8:30 p.m. when three men approached the victim from behind.

A St. Paul teen was sentenced Wednesday to more than 23 years in prison for the shooting death of a West St. Paul man in January of 2013, according to the Dakota County Attorney’s office. Donovan Michael Diego, 19, was convicted of second-degree intentional murder in connection with the death of 31-year-old David-Reyes-Galvan on January 11, 2013. Diego, who was 16 at the time of the crime, were indicted by a Dakota County grand jury last October alongside Cristino Andres Rosario and Malik Jamal Alize Farmer.
New Hope Police are investigating an armed robbery at a restaurant Friday morning. The robbery occurred at the Pizza Hut at 7500 Bass Lake Road at 10 a.m., when two suspects entered the restaurant and showed an employee a dark-colored handgun. The men then tied up a female employee, who was able to call police after they left. She was not injured during the robbery.
