A community is mourning the loss of a police officer who spent more than two decades serving in Central Minnesota. Sartell Police Officer Joe Schmitz had gone in for surgery on March 20 for a bulging disc in his neck. But after he returned home an artery ruptured pressing against his airway.
The 20-year-old man who was shot in the chest behind a strip mall in Sartell Thursday morning has died, according to Sartell Police. Maurice Galvin Jr. of St. Cloud passed away at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Cloud Hospital. On Friday morning, 23-year-old Demetreus Anthony McGinnis was formally charged with second-degree murder.
Authorities are investigating a shooting incident in Sartell on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred at about noon at a strip mall on the 1700 block of Pine Cone Rd. N., according to Lt. Jon Lentz of the Stearns County Sheriff’s office. Police were also called to CentraCare Health Plaza in St. Cloud, which is about five miles away from the scene of the shooting.
Sartell Police are asking people to be on alert after a 56-year-old woman was kidnapped in a McDonald’s parking lot. It happened around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday night near Highway 15 and Stearns County Road 1. When the woman came out of the restaurant and got into her vehicle, a masked man was waiting for her. Police Chief Jim Hughes says the man asked for money and told the woman to drive.
