The Sauk Rapids Police Department is asking for the public’s help after a 16-year-old boy was robbed and punched early Sunday afternoon. Police say at 6 p.m. the teen victim was walking along the street near 6th Avenue North and 7th Street North in Sauk Rapids when two cars stopped beside him.
A Sauk Rapids man fought police officers, deputies and staff at St. Cloud Hospital after being arrested Saturday afternoon. Shawn Thomas Iees, 26, was spotted by Stearns County deputies and St. Cloud Police officers just before 2 p.m. while walking on Veteran’s Drive near 24th Avenue North in St. Cloud, according to the Stearns County Sheriff’s office. Officers attempted to stop Iees, who has three outstanding warrants, but he fled, leading to a brief foot chase.
Federal authorities have dropped an attempt to block a Minnesota man from marketing merchandise poking fun at the National Security Agency for its surveillance of citizens. Dan McCall, of Sauk Rapids, is claiming victory against the NSA and the Department of Homeland Security.
Sartell Police are asking people to be on alert after a 56-year-old woman was kidnapped in a McDonald’s parking lot. It happened around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday night near Highway 15 and Stearns County Road 1. When the woman came out of the restaurant and got into her vehicle, a masked man was waiting for her. Police Chief Jim Hughes says the man asked for money and told the woman to drive.
Five people are in the Douglas County Jail after the West Central Minnesota Narcotics Task Force, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and local police departments made a series of methamphetamine-related busts this week. On Monday, agents and officers from Alexandria Police arrested 29-year-old Kyle Hildebrand of South Haven and 23-year-old Jami Johnson of Sauk Rapid. Undercover agents bought 106 grams of meth for $6,000 from Hildebrand and Johnson, which has a street value of over $21,000. They were both eventually charged with 1st-degree controlled substance sales crime.
A pedestrian was struck and killed by a motorist Saturday evening in Sauk Rapids, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The fatal accident happened at 5:36 p.m. on Highway 10 near County Road 13, when a 1990 Buick Century driven by Angela Lott, 37, left the southbound lane, hitting and killing the pedestrian. Lott, from Sauk Rapids, suffered non-life threatening injuries. The identity of the victim has not yet been released.
An 18-year-old Sauk Rapids man accused of a deadly assault has changed his originally plea of not guilty to 2nd-degree murder in a Stearns County court Friday morning. According to the Stearns County Attorney’s office, Jesse Smithers amended his plea to 2nd-degree unintentional murder. In Sept. 2012, Smithers was riding in a car driving down a St. Cloud alley when he asked the driver to stop. He got out of the vehicle and approached three men nearby, including Colton Gleason. Smithers punched Gleason with a closed fist. He later died at St. Cloud Hospital from his injuries. Smithers was 17 at the time of the crime, and was charged as an adult.
Police have arrested and charged two men with first-degree assault after a St. Augusta victim was shot in the victim’s home earlier this week. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office said on Wednesday, Erik Magnuson, 30, of St. Cloud, and 21-year-old Jerod Jakel, of Sauk Rapids, entered a home on the 23000 block of 69th Avenue in St. Augusta.
Maple Grove Police have arrested a man suspected of a month-long armed-robbery spree that mostly targeted fast-food restaurants along the Interstate 94 corridor. According to authorities, Douglas Wayne Gravelle was taken into custody on Thursday. This arrest comes after a string of armed robberies which began in early September. Fast-food restaurants in Sauk Rapids, St. Cloud, Big Lake, Clearwater and Monticello were targeted. A Game Stop video game store in Monticello may also have been robbed by Gravelle earlier this month.
Police in Sauk Rapids said Wednesday they’re investigating the death of a 3-month old child over the weekend. Authorities responded to a medical situation at a residential health facility on the 1400 block of 10th Avenue NE at about 7:27 a.m. Sunday.
