Monday is Kids & Last Chance Day at the Minnesota State Fair. There will be discounts in the Mighty Midway & Kidway all day to help people get the most out of the last day at the fair. There will also be special last chance bargains throughout the faigrounds.
Sunday is Minnesota History Day at the Minnesota State Fair. There will be entertainment, trivia, crafts and more activates that celebrate Minnesota History at Carousel Park.
Tuesday is Military Appreciation Day at the Minnesota State Fair. Check out the Salute to Military Kids parade at 11:30 a.m. along with entertainment in Carousel Park. Displays by military support organizations will be at Promo Place. Also be sure to check out early bird specials until 1 p.m. at the Mighty Midway & Kidway.
Monday is Seniors, Kids and Minnesota State Patrol Day at the Minnesota State Fair. The State Patrol will have vehicles and safety activities at Promo Place. Also keep an eye out for Mighty Midway and Kidway discounts all day.
The University of Minnesota men’s basketball program announced its 2014-15 schedule late last week as Richard Pitino enters his second year with the program. The Gophers, coming off an NIT title, will have 17 home gamed during the regular season.
Sunday is Minnesota Cooks Day at the Minnesota State Fair. So, see culinary demonstrations in Carousel Park. Also, visit the animals early, because the Cattle, Sheep, Poultry and Swine Barns close at 3 p.m.
Saturday is 4-H Day at the Minnesota State Fair. Visit the barns and animal competition areas to celebrate 4-H. See displays and performances in the 4-H building.
Today is Governor’s Fire Prevention Day at the Minnesota State Fair. Catch safety and life-saving activities throughout the fairgrounds. Early Bird Specials until 1 p.m. at Mighty Midway & Kidway.
Today, the first day of the fair, is Thrifty Thursday at the Minnesota State Fair. Admission prices are reduced all day, and many merchandise and food vendors offer special Thrifty Thursday bargains for all fair guests. All-day discounts are offered on Mighty Midway and Kidway rides, games and concessions.

If all goes according to plan, the possibility of an FCS wins over one of the big boys of college football won’t exist much longer in the Big Ten. The College Football Playoff is coming next season, and strength of schedule is part of the criteria the selection committee will use to determine the four teams. Playing FCS opponents wouldn’t help the cause.
New coach Rich Pitino and his Gophers will open the Big Ten Conference season with none other than the national runner-up Michigan Wolverines. The University of Minnesota men’s basketball team’s 2014 conference schedule was released Wednesday, and it includes a home opener against Michigan on Jan. 2 before playing Purdue on Jan. 5 at Williams Arena.
The Minnesota Timberwolves will open the regular season at home for the 13th straight year. But they will not play San Antonio in Minnesota next season. The Wolves announced their schedule on Tuesday.
Nine of the Gopher men’s basketball team’s 13 non-conference games for the 2013-14 season will be played within the friendly confines of Williams Arena. Game times and TV rights will be released by the Big Ten Conference at a later date.
