Longoria, Ramos Lead Rays To 5-4 Win Over Twins

Evan Longoria hit a two-run double and Cesar Ramos looked sharp on the mound, sending the Tampa Bay Rays to a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night. Tampa Bay improved to 14-4-2 this spring, the best record in the Grapefruit League. The Rays have allowed 67 runs, fewest in the majors. Ramos, trying to win the fifth spot in the rotation, struck out six in 4 2-3 scoreless innings. He gave up four hits and a walk, throwing 64 pitches before giving way to Grant Balfour.

They had to do it on Sunday, because they know they may not get another chance. The Twins committed three errors and struck out 16 times in a 5-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians in the season finale, a game that could mark the end of Gardenhire’s 12-year tenure in Minnesota.

Scott Diamond pitched into the seventh inning for his first win since June, and the Minnesota Twins avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Wednesday. Diamond (6-11) allowed three runs and five hits in 6 1-3 innings to earn his first big league win since June 20 against the White Sox. Since then, he was 0-5 with a 6.20 ERA in eight starts and spent more than a month at Triple-A Rochester.

Scott Diamond is running out of answers while trying to solve his pitching problems. Todd Redmond threw one-hit ball over five innings for his first major league win and the Toronto Blue Jays hit three home runs off Diamond Sunday to beat the slumping Twins 11-5. “It’s frustrating the way it all worked out again,” said Diamond, who’s allowed eight homers in his past four starts. “I’m really struggling keeping guys in the park.” Diamond (5-8) allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 2-3 innings and matched a career-high with four walks, losing for the fourth time in six starts.
