A Babbitt man pleaded guilty Wednesday to strangling his mother’s boyfriend to death. Shawn Russel Doherty, 26, was charged with intentional second-degree murder, and was sentenced to 27 years in prison in a plea deal with the St. Louis County Attorney’s office.
A 27-year-old Eveleth man faces third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter charges in connection with the synthetic drug-related death of a Duluth woman in 2013. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s office says Bryan Joseph Hodapp is accused of supplying 21-year-old Leann Wicklund with the substance called 25I-NBOMe, a psychedelic synthetic drug, on Aug. 30, 2013.

The lead prosecutor in St. Louis County says the Diocese of Duluth should have gone to police immediately after learning a priest was accused of sexually abusing a child. County Attorney Mark Rubin says the diocese waited 15 months before notifying authorities that the Rev. Cornelius Kelleher was accused of abusing a girl years ago.
A Cloquet man pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder, witness tampering and aiding and abetting arson in connection to a cold case from 2000. According to the St. Louis County Attorney’s office, Joseph John Couture Jr. admitted to murdering Trina Louise Langenbrunner on Sept. 3, 2000. Langenbrunner, who was 33 at the time, was found stabbed and beaten to death near a gravel pit in St. Louis County. Her murder was a cold case until last year.
