Two large pieces of the single-engine plane that crashed into Lake Superior earlier this month, killing the pilot, have been recovered. The victim of the crash was 47-year-old Alexander Georg Obersteg of Steinfeld, Germany.
Authorities say a major sandbagging operation is under way on Lake Kabetogama (kab-uh-TOH’-gah-muh) in far northern Minnesota.
The director of homeland security and emergency management for the St. Louis County sheriff’s office, Steve Steblay (steb-LYE’), says the lake level rose sharply over the weekend. He says crews are sandbagging homes, resorts and roads to protect them. He says a large percentage of the resort and private docks and shoreline structures such as boathouses on Kabetogama are gone or have been destroyed.
A Nebraska man died Wednesday evening when he fell out of a fishing boat into Lake Vermilion in northeast Minnesota. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call a water emergency call around 7:26 p.m. near Cable Bay. According to the sheriff’s office, the 64-year-old man was a passenger in the boat and fell out as it was traveling through Cable Bay.

Authorities in northern Minnesota have a suspect in custody after a 55-year-old man was murdered on Monday. According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s office, the Babbitt Police Department responded to a medical emergency call just after 11 a.m. and found Paul John Bulen lying injured on a road. Bulen was brought to an Ely hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police arrested 24-year-old Shawn Russel Doherty, who is currently being held in the St. Louis County Jail
A 52-year-old Duluth resident was taken into custody Thursday after stealing a pick-up truck, firearms and leading authorities on a chase that ended near the Duluth Airport, authorities said. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary in progress at about 4:44 p.m. Thursday at a residence on Lismore Road.
Authorities said two Duluth men suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries after a mishap with a firearm at a gun range on Sunday, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

Two people are being treated with non-life-threatening injuries after the motorcycle they were riding on collided with a minivan Saturday near Babbitt, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s office. At 1:15 p.m., 67-year-old Susan Fetterer of Plymouth attempted to turn on to northbound Highway 21 and collided with a motorcycle. Thirty-five-year-old Dewi Webb, the motorcycle driver, and 36-year-old passenger Tiffany Webb were ejected from the bike on impact.
A 22-year-old St. Paul man has been arrested in connection with a Sept. 1 burglary of a city hall in northern Minnesota, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said Jacob William Reynolds was arrested Tuesday in connection with the incident, which happened at the McKinley City Hall just after 9 a.m. on Sept. 1.
Authorities in northern Minnesota are looking for a suspect after the City Hall and library in McKinley were burglarized on Sunday. The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened sometime early Sunday morning.
