Backstrom, Zucker Have Surgeries For Wild

Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom and forward Jason Zucker had surgery this week to address injuries that ended their seasons. The Wild announced Wednesday that Backstrom had surgery in Philadelphia on Tuesday on a core muscle injury. The injury bothered Backstrom for much of the season. He went 5-11-2 with a 3.02 goals-against average and .899 save percentage. He has not played since Jan. 30. The team says it expects him to be fully recovered in time for next season.

Gov. Mark Dayton has checked out of Mayo Clinic after hip surgery. Dayton’s office says that he left the Rochester clinic on Friday and returned to the governor’s residence in St. Paul. He checked into Mayo Clinic on Monday where he underwent the surgical procedure to alleviate pain in his hip.

Koivu Likely Out For Wild This Week; Olympics?

Mikko Koivu’s return to the Minnesota Wild likely won’t come until after the Olympics, leaving his availability for Finland during the Winter Games in question. Koivu broke his right ankle Jan. 4 when he was hit by a puck and had surgery to accelerate the recovery. The captain and first-line center has resumed skating, but Wild coach Mike Yeo told reporters after practice Monday that Koivu’s availability for the last two games before the Olympics break was “highly in doubt.”
