Several hundred people, some carrying the Tibetan flag, marched in downtown Minneapolis Monday morning to mark the 55th anniversary of National Uprising Day in Tibet. On this day in 1959, thousands of Tibetans spontaneously gathered to protect His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, and to protest against Chinese Occupation.
The Dalai Lama has observed Tibetan New Year celebrations outside India for the first time since going into exile more than 50 years ago. About 3,000 Tibetan-Americans from across the country packed an auditorium Sunday morning at Augsburg College in Minneapolis to celebrate the holiday with the Buddhist spiritual leader. He spoke at Macalester College in St. Paul on Sunday afternoon.
