The Green Line opening is just the newest chapter in the rich, storied history of University Avenue. Minneapolis and St. Paul were connected in 1890 with the creation of the street car system, according to Chad Roberts with the Ramsey County Historic Society.
We had above average rainfall in May, causing some Twin Cities lakes to overflow.
There was hope that the rain would help White Bear Lake. The water level was down 6 feet last year — the lowest it has ever been.

You wouldn’t think a frozen lake would offer much inspiration for local artists, but you’ll find some impressive work and creativity on White Bear Lake. Now in its eight year, the Art Shanty Projects is underway. After years on Medicine Lake, its new location isn’t stopping hundreds from visiting the outdoor gallery. The typical ice house does little to catch the eye. But near Ramsey Beach, one cluster makes people take notice.
They took a year off and changed venues, but the Art Shanty Projects opened for the season this past weekend, and it’s just as much fun as it’s ever been (which is to say, quite a lot). There’s a lot to see and do.
For the second day in a row, hundreds of schools in Minnesota are closed because of extremely cold weather. A bank sign in Champlin was flashing 25 degrees below zero overnight. Many school districts said they were concerned about kids waiting outside for buses Tuesday morning, so they played it safe and canceled classes.
A driver was killed after being ejected from a truck in a rollover crash early Friday morning. According to the State Patrol, the crash happened along Highway 61 in Ramsey County, just south of Buffalo Street.
Ten Minnesota high school teams will compete in the High School Hockey Faceoff at TCF Bank Stadium next month. The five-game competition will be held Jan. 11 as part of the Hockey City Classic Winter Festival.

A woman was sentenced to five years probation in court Monday for harassing her neighbors in White Bear Lake. Over the years, 50-year-old Lori Christensen was accused of hanging demeaning signs that were targeting her neighbors and their children.
Lori Christiansen, whom some call the “neighbor from hell,” did not comment Wednesday as she left the courtroom. Christiansen, formerly of White Bear Lake, got national attention for tormenting her neighbors. Over the years, she has been accused of hanging demeaning signs on her garage targeting her neighbors and their children. She also violated a harassment restraining order.
One of Minnesota’s premier lakes has been disappearing before our very eyes. White Bear Lake is now down more than five feet to the lowest level ever seen. And some homeowners and businesses say the DNR is to blame.
