Minnesota defenseman Matt Dumba did a little bit of everything for the Wild, and his coach took notice. Dumba scored his third goal of the season in the first period, made a game-saving defensive play in overtime, and seconds later started the breakout that led to Mikko Koivu’s winning goal as the Wild edged the Calgary Flames 3-2 on Wednesday night.
Thomas Vanek had two goals and an assist, and Devan Dubnyk stopped 24 shots to lift the surging Minnesota Wild past the Carolina Hurricanes 6-3 on Saturday night. Minnesota nearly blew a three-goal lead during a sloppy second period, but Dubnyk helped the league’s fourth-best penalty kill unit stymie a four-minute power play to prevent Carolina from tying it.
Just one month ago, the Wild were a mess after losing 12 out of 14 games to fall to third-worst in the Western Conference. Buoyed by the acquisition of goalie Devan Dubnyk, the Wild have zoomed back into playoff contention with a 9-1-2 record over their last 12 games.
