Willingham Hits 1st HR, Twins Beat Red Sox 7-4

Josh Willingham finally hit his first home run of the spring in Minnesota’s exhibition finale, and the Twins beat the Boston Red Sox 7-4 on Saturday. The game was called because of rain with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Mike Napoli went 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs for the Red Sox. Jake Peavy, making his third Grapefruit League start, gave up one run and three hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out three.

Sharks Beat Wild 3-2 In OT For 6th Straight

Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau found the perfect way to celebrate their new contract extensions. Thornton scored his second goal of the game with 1:30 remaining in overtime to lead the San Jose Sharks to their sixth straight win, 3-2 over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.

Kevin Martin scored 27 points, Kevin Love had 18 of his 25 points during Minnesota’s 47-point first quarter, and the Timberwolves snapped a 22-game losing streak against the Los Angeles Lakers with a 113-90 victory Sunday night.

David Cobb carried 27 times for 139 yards and a touchdown, and Minnesota held Penn State scoreless over the final 33-plus minutes to grind out a 24-10 victory on Saturday, the fourth in a row for the Golden Gophers.

Josh Harding stopped 16 shots for his first shutout of the season and the Minnesota Wild beat the Nashville Predators 2-0 Tuesday night. Justin Fontaine scored late in the second period and Jason Pominville added an empty-net tally for the Wild, who have scored just seven goals in the past five games.

Siemone Augustus scored 23 points to lead the Minnesota Lynx to a physical 83-74 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday night in a matchup of the top two teams in the Western Conference. Rebekkah Brunson had a season-high 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Minnesota Lynx in a 91-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Thursday night. Seimone Augustus scored 18 points, Maya Moore had 17, Lindsay Whalen added 12 and Janel McCarville 11 for the Lynx (19-7), who shot a season-best 58 percent (38 for 66) from the floor. Minnesota pulled one game in front of Los Angeles for first place in the Western Conference.

Herrmann’s Late Double Lifts Twins Over Tigers 7-6

Chris Herrmann’s second RBI double of the game broke an eighth-inning tie and helped the Minnesota Twins to a 7-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. With two out, Herrmann lined a ball into the right-center field gap. Center fielder Austin Jackson got a bad break on the ball, and just missed while attempting a shoestring catch. Doug Bernier scored from second to give the Twins the lead.
