Women’s Economic Security Act
A bill signed into law by Gov. Mark Dayton Sunday is aimed at helping women in the workplace. Lawmakers and advocates joined the governor on this Mother’s Day to sign the Women’s Economic Security Act.
New parents would be entitled to longer unpaid leaves. Mothers would find more private space at work to nurse, other than a restroom stall. And large state contractors would have to certify they pay men and women similar salaries for similar jobs.
The Minnesota Senate approved wide-ranging legislation Wednesday to expand workplace protections for women including provisions aimed at leveling pay and accommodating pregnancies. The 51-14 vote sets up a likely negotiation with the House, which passed legislation that goes even further.
Lawmakers will be less than a month from the mandatory session finish line when they return to the Capitol after Easter, but don’t be surprised if they make an earlier break for it. Much of the heavy lifting of the election-year session is done. Negotiators from the House, Senate and Gov. Mark Dayton’s administration forecast more ease than usual buttoning up remaining tax and budget bills.
