A Rogers woman who spent two-and-a-half months in the hospital has an amazing story of recovery and optimism. Adela Alvarez went into cardiac arrest while teaching a Zumba class last winter, and as doctors worked to save her life, they discovered another serious threat.
Students at a high school just west of the metro are pulling together to help a teacher in critical condition after suffering a heart attack. Mayer Lutheran High School students are supporting their Spanish teacher, Adela Alvarez, by raising money to help with her medical expenses. Joel Landskroener, executive director at Mayer, says when Alvarez wasn’t in the classroom teaching Spanish to teenagers, she was out in the community teaching Zumba.

Zumba, the Latin dance-inspired fitness program developed in the 1990s, is alive and well in the Twin Cities. Zumba sessions provide strength training and aerobic dancing led by licensed instructors trained in just this type of fun.
