Students at a high school just west of the metro are pulling together to help a teacher in critical condition after suffering a heart attack. Mayer Lutheran High School students are supporting their Spanish teacher, Adela Alvarez, by raising money to help with her medical expenses. Joel Landskroener, executive director at Mayer, says when Alvarez wasn’t in the classroom teaching Spanish to teenagers, she was out in the community teaching Zumba.
A busy Minneapolis street is about to change dramatically this Sunday for 20 blocks.
Zumba, the Latin dance-inspired fitness program developed in the 1990s, is alive and well in the Twin Cities. Zumba sessions provide strength training and aerobic dancing led by licensed instructors trained in just this type of fun. The area’s best classes, though, bring with them an exciting sense of community and bumping beats that keep dancers coming back time and again.
