Saint Paul Winter Carnival
109 4th St W.
St Paul, MN 55102

The "coolest celebration on Earth" has been running strong in Minnesota's capital since 1886, and shows no signs of slowing down. The Torchlight Parade, the 150-foot Christmas tree, the lights, the sounds, the mini-donuts are all there. But you don't have to wait for the actual carnival (which starts Jan. 8) if you want your holiday fix a little earlier. Rice Park twinkles with lights starting in November, and the Wells Fargo Winter Skate (free unless you need to rent skates) takes place across the street at the foot of the stunning Landmark Center (which looks especially stunning in the winter), and the entire area has the feel that "A Miracle on 34th Street" just might be real.

Bentleyville Festival Park
350 Harbor Drive
Duluth, MN 55802
(218) 722-5573
www.bayfrontfestivalpark.com

"America's largest free walk through lighting display" is a truly incredible display of light and color right on the waterfront. In addition to the awe-inspiring display, you can also enjoy hot cocoa, roasted marshmallows, popcorn and cookies as part of the experience. It's about the season here, and it's about the spirit of the holiday; the spirit of giving. While Duluth might be known more as a summer destination, this event makes braving the snowdrifts worth it. Running from Nov. 21 - Dec. 27, it's a memorable way to celebrate the holiday season.

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train
Union Depot
214 4th St E
St Paul, MN 55101
(651) 202-2700
www.uniondepot.org

Making its stop at St. Paul's majestic Union Depot is the brightly-lit Canadien Pacific Holiday Train. A delight for the young and the young-at-heart, this free event will light up Lowertown as the train rolls into the station. There are tickets available for the VIP viewing area, the proceeds of which go to the Keystone Community Services Food Shelf. But to enjoy live music by Doc Walker and Kira Isabella and take part in the festivities wrapped up in the cheer of the holiday, just bring yourself and your winter coat.

Macy's Santaland Display

Minneapolis, MN 55402
(612) 375-2200
www.macys.com

For years now, the eighth floor of the Macy's on Nicollet Mall has been transformed into a paradise for the holidays. Santa is available for younger kids, there are plenty of holiday-themed baked goods to munch on, and a store for last-minute gift-buying. But really, the display itself is the reason to go. Wander through the North Pole, dazzled by the colorful displays, giggling at the shenanigans of Santa's elves and becoming fully immersed in the fantastical world of Christmas.

Grand Meander
752 Grand Ave
St. Paul, Minnesota 55105
(651) 699-0029

Grand Avenue feels sort of like the Main Street of St. Paul, with quaint shops lining the streets and a community atmosphere that often gets lost in big cities. Never is this more the case than on Dec. 5, when you can hear carolers singing from store to store, meet Santa, partake in holiday-themed activities set up along the avenue, bask in the glow of Christmas lights and ride a historic trolley along the 20-block stretch. You'll be in good company as people stroll along, singing and laughing, shopping, and simply enjoying the season.
