There is also an open studio option where classes begin with a story and participants are supplied with materials to explore their artistic side. While older children will love getting creative with pottery and other crafts like glass mosaics, jewelry and wind chimes, younger children can take part in the fun too. Explore the book arts with your family during a variety of classes for preschool-age to adults. Learn how to use printing presses to make posters and take your very own home. Try making paper or constructing books as well. Class options for older kids include making a hardcover journal, or ages two and up can learn how to make print patterns for books.

Don't miss the Family Paint series at the Austin ArtWorks Center, where families can collaborate their artistic efforts on a single canvas or each make their own special treasure to take home. Current cost for Austin Area Commission for the Arts members is $25 per canvas or $30 for non-members. The Family Paint sessions typically last for two hours on a Saturday. Other events and classes at the center include live musical performances, introduction to knitting and beginner clay classes.

Free family art classes happen once per month at the Rumriver Art Center in Anoka. These 60-minute classes give kids over the age of five and their caregivers the tools, instruction and inspiration to explore their creativity. Other classes are also available at Rumriver, including drawing, painting, pottery, mixed media and art journaling. Pre-registration for the free family art classes are required.
