Best Poetry Events In Minnesota

Winter in Minnesota can be long and brutal. Thankfully, with the arrival of April, spring weather is right around the corner. April also brings a celebration many have been waiting all year for - National Poetry Month. Love of lyric, verse, haiku and a good ode can be seen throughout the state as events dedicated to poetry have been organized. Check out these poetry events as an opportunity to share personal creations or hear the inspired words of others.

Poetry written and read by Minnesota authors will be featured at Common Good Books. The four poetry finalists from the Minnesota Book Awards will be on hand this evening to share their talents and inspirations with the public. Published collections of poetry from these authors will also be available to read and enjoy. Included in the cast of featured guests are Todd Boss, Dore Kiesselbach, Patricia Kirkpatrick and Jim Johnson. This fantastic event is scheduled for the evening of April 8 at 7 p.m.

Also hosted at Common Good Books, two highly acclaimed and talented poets will be present in St. Paul to read from their recent works. Sally Keith will read from her published poetry collection, "The Fact of the Matter," a collection of works dedicated to describing the contrast between 'the way things are' and 'the way we want them to be.' Peter Campion, a professor at the University of Minnesota, will also be reading from his most recent poetry collection, "The Lions." Both authors will be available for questions after the event as well. This event is scheduled for April 15 at 7 p.m.

The Valley Bookseller is a fantastic local bookstore located on Main Street of Stillwater. This quaint, poetry friendly spot offers book clubs, author events and a fantastic collection of current and past best sellers. On April 14, in honor of National Poetry Month, the Classics Book Club will be hosting a poetry event. Favorite poetry from classic collections will be read along with new or unpublished works. Enjoy an afternoon of poetry appreciation at the Valley Bookseller. This event is scheduled for April 14 at 2 p.m.

Magers & Quinn presents a night of poetry on Friday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. A recently published poet, Peter Gloviczki, reads from his first collection, "Kicking Gravity." Although his work has been in many other periodicals and publications, "Kicking Gravity" is his first book of poems. Other poets will be joining Gloviczki at this event to read from their works as well. Gloviczki will be joined by the authors Arlene Kim, Maria Damon and A K Beck.

Poetry lovers and writers in southern Minnesota have formed a group that allows them to dedicate time to listening and reciting poetry. Speakers and published poets often attend the meetings as guests and are available to answer questions regarding the craft of creating poetry. Every third Thursday of the month is wine and poetry night. Enjoy a glass of vino and readings of poetry along with an invitation to read personal pieces.
