Often the most popular form of theater, the musical is fun for the whole family, especially during the holidays. Powerful voices shine across dazzling stages, full of color and excitement that will leave you breathless. If you're planning on going to a show this season, here are a few that should not be missed.

An epic tale of American music, this broadway hit tells the story of Berry Gordy, the man behind some our greatest musicians. Starting as a boxer, Gordy built an empire, launching the careers of icons such as Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, among others. In the classic sounds of the era, the story is told with as much pizzazz and panache as you would expect from the cool cats behind Motown. Buddy Holly's life and music has fascinated the public for decades, and mixing 24 hit songs into a wild, fascinating story of the man's life is sure to be a show you won't forget. Sing along or sit back and let the music wash over you. Added bonus: The History Center sits directly on the Green Line's 10th Street Station. If you feel like drinking like a rock star before or after the show, the train will be waiting to take you home.

Downtown St. Paul's Park Square Theater just keeps doing bigger and better things. Not only has its second stage just opened, but its current season has more shows planned than big kid on the block the Guthrie. One of them not to be missed is the adaptation of Alice Walker's powerful and beautiful novel "The Color Purple." Interweaving soul, jazz and gospel music into the story of a young woman's struggle to find love, peace and a place in a tough world, this musical isn't your usual joyful romp in the theater. You're sure to be moved.
