Tough days for those cheapskates out there. $5 is not what it used to be. Even a simple burger at most places will run you over $5. So where do you go with a five dollar bill hoping to get a rib-sticking, crazy meal? Well, there are places if you know where to look. Good thing for us Dara has our wallets covered! As always, you can find more Dara at mspmag.com!
The Dago At Dusty’s Bar
1319 Marshall St NE
Minneapolis, MN 55413
Dara is from Queens, New York. She hasn’t been able to say the “D” word since she moved here. But since it’s a sandwich, we’re comfortable talking about it. The classic sausage-patty sandwich at Dusty’s is a wonder. Reasonably-priced and a perfect way to start the list. It’s $5 for the regular size and you’ll be transported to the east coast while simultaneously living out a bit of the Midwest’s past at Dusty’s! Don’t forget to wash it down with a Nordeast.
The Pizza Burger At The Dari-Ette Drive-In
1440 E. Minnehaha Ave.
Saint Paul, Minnesota 55106
We’re staying with the Italian-American theme with our first two picks. The Pizza Burger at the Dari-Ette on the east side of St. Paul will set you back $3.99. Really great food on a budget is what the Dari-Ette does best and Dara’s favorite is the Pizza Burger. They drop a bunch of their classic Italian Red Sauce on it and you’re off and running. Again, for $3.99. Can’t beat that.
Quesadilla From Los Ocampo
809 E Lake St.
Minneapolis, MN 55407
There’s something special about a homemade tortilla, and if you haven’t had one you should. They’re soft, delicious and fried up on the grill. Seriously good eats and a massive meal for under $5. You can find Los Ocampo in a few different spots including St. Paul, South Minneapolis and inside the Midtown Global Market. It’s real-deal Mexican and made fresh. Check it out.
Slice Of The Day From Cossetta
211 7th St W.
St Paul, MN 55102
A West 7th institution in downtown St. Paul since the turn of the century (the last one, not 13 year ago…yes, over 100 years), Cossetta’s turns out magnificent Italian and nothing beats their Slice of the Day deal. Three toppings, about the size of a small country, and all for $4.39. There’s a reason you find a line out the door at lunchtime. It’s really good pizza for a really great price.
Specialty Banh Mi From Saigon
704 University Ave. W.
Saint Paul, Minnesota 55104
Here’s one that will likely be way off your radar. Cheap. Filling. Under $5. Head to Frogtown off University in St. Paul for a sandwich from Saigon. Not just any sandwich though. We’re talking Southeast Asian Banh Mi sandwiches filled with wonderful meats, fresh veggies and much more. It’s huge, filling and at the entrance to flavor city. You’ll love it. Bring a $5 and fill-up!
