A listener recently asked Dara to share her favorite places to get shrimp. The little crustaceans are seemingly on every menu, are cooked (or not cooked) in endless ways and can be a healthy (and Lent-friendly) option when dining out. Grilled, broiled, baked, fried, sauteed, and on and on, shrimp lend themselves to almost any cuisine. It can replace almost any other protein in almost any dish. There’s a reason shrimp consumption is a $50 Billion business!
So where do you go to find a creative and delicious shrimp dish in the Twin Cities? Dara broke it down for you in ways from classic and exotic. You’ll be sure to find these abundant sea creatures prepared to your liking on Dara’s Top 5 Shrimp Dishes in the Twin Cities!
Grand Szechuan- Salt and Pepper Shrimp
10602 France Ave S
Bloomington, MN 55437
The Grand Szechuan in Bloomington might not be a traditional seafood house but don’t overlook some of our great Asian restaurants. Dara loves the Salt and Pepper Shrimp. Here you’ll get whole, head-on shrimp, sauteed very hot with just salt and pepper. Peel and eat at the table and it’s a primal, finger licking and tasting way to enjoy shrimp! You can also go another route and get Kung Pao Shrimp, Tofu with Shrimp and Pickled Vegetables, Fried Shrimp and more.
Krung Thep Thai- Lemon Grass Salad with Shrimp
2523 Nicollet Ave
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55404
Staying in Asia for a moment, Dara recommends the Lemon Grass Salad with Shrimp from Krung Thep Thai on “Eat Street” in South Minneapolis. Zingy, fresh, full of lime, cilantro and pepper, this cold shrimp dish will light up your taste buds in addition to being super fragrant. It really captures the best of Thai cuisine with huge flavor and freshness. Enjoy!
Oceanaire- The Mega Shrimp Cocktail
50 S 6th St
Minneapolis, MN 55402
Here’s our classic. We’ve all had shrimp cocktail whether it be the fancy restaurant kind or the watery platter at a graduation party you aren’t sure about. It can be done well. It can be scary. This is the best of the best at Oceanaire. These jumbo shrimp are designed to be an oxymoron. Juicy, perfectly cooked and chilled, it’s a shrimp cocktail you won’t soon forget. The housemade cocktail sauce comes with a nice snap from the horseradish and is a great accompaniment . Served totally old-school over ice, this is “THE” shrimp cocktail! Bonus points for Oceanaire being committed to sustainable seafood too. Eating well and protecting the oceans is always a good thing.
Sonora Grill- Shrimp Tacos
920 E Lake St #126
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55407
Sonora grill was recently mentioned in Dara’s list of the Top 5 Tacos. Without question, the top of the taco heap are the amazing shrimp tacos. Lightly crisped up in the fryer with a Red Tempura Batter, these are the shrimp tacos of your dreams. There are several other taco choices you shouldn’t miss but make sure you get at least one with the shrimp. At just $3.50 a pop, it’s shrimpy goodness on a budget!
Sea Change- The Raw Langoustines
806 S 2nd St
Minneapolis, MN 55415
Sustainable seafood, James Beard Award-Winning Chefs (and many more accolades) plus a spot in the Guthrie Theater along the Mississippi riverfront makes loving Sea Change an easy choice. There are actually a few shrimp dishes here that could make the list. But the Raw Langoustines are spectacular. Ok, ok, we know that the word raw will scare so many people away. They come with hot olive oil, chile and rosemary and are so fresh and delicate, you won’t even think about them being raw. The results are sublime, balanced and delicious. You’ll be blown away with these, we promise! Also a restaurant committed to sustainable seafood so eat and protect your conscious at the same time.
