OK, you know who you are. You’ve waited until the last-minute. Or maybe you’re from out of town and can’t get home. What if the oven breaks or the dog manages to get the turkey (the Horror!!!). Now it’s Thanksgiving and you need options. Nobody wants a microwave dinner on the holiday where we’re supposed to gorge ourselves and it’s way too late for the St. Paul Grill (it’s booked kids). Right? Right. So, what to do. Dara has ideas and don’t we love ideas! Here are her Top 5 (actually 6…we have a tie) Thanksgiving Emergency Solutions!

Yangtze
5625 Wayzata Blvd.
St Louis Park, MN 55416
(952) 541-9469

“Dim Sum refers to a style of Chinese food prepared as small bite-sized or individual portions of food traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Dim sum dishes are carted around the restaurant for customers to choose their orders while seated at their tables.” That’s what it says on Wikipedia. Done well, it’s a fantastic experience. Yangtze in St. Louis Park does it as well as anyone in town and would make a unique and wonderful addition to your Thanksgiving table.

Minneapolis, MN 55414

Here’s our tie. Because Dim Sum is also done wonderfully at Pagoda in Dinkytown. It’s super inexpensive, done quickly and perfect for sharing with a lot of guests. They’re also open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM so no matter what time your meal plan collapses, Pagoda can step in and save your Turkey.

Common Roots
2558 Lyndale Ave S.
Minneapolis, MN 55405
(612) 871-2360

Happy Chanukkah. It’s a rare year where Thanksgiving and Hannukkah are on the same day. How rare? The last time it happened was 1888 and the next is 79,043 years from now (by one estimate widely shared in Jewish circles). Why bring this up? Because Common Roots has you both covered. You can get Lattes, Latkes (potato pancakes) and Thanksgiving food. Hit all your holidays, cook none of it yourself, and enjoy the day at Common Roots.

Smack Shack
603 N Washington Ave.
Minneapolis, MN 55401
(612) 259-7288

From food truck to brick-and-mortar, Smack Shack has taken lobster to an entirely new level of fantastic in the Twin Cities. Can you think of a better way to fix your Thanksgiving day disaster, then going to pick up a nice lobster to share with the family? Well, for some reason, they’re open from 3:00 PM to 1:00 AM on Thanksgiving. We think a 5 pound lobster is a perfect way to say thanks! Maybe you should just let the dogs eat the turkey and do this anyway?

Monte Carlo
219 3rd Ave N.
Minneapolis, MN 55401

Number two on Dara’s list is a place that can turn Thanksgiving into something really special. So, the Monte Carlo, a Minneapolis institution since 1906, changes nothing on the holiday. They’re open regular hours, you can get a cold martini, rare steaks, their famous chicken wings, a turkey club and anything else you could want from a classic Minneapolis restaurant.

Nye’s Polonaise
112 E Hennepin Ave.
Minneapolis, MN 55414
(612) 379-2021

Here’s Dara’s pick for the best spot to save your Thanksgiving. It’s yet another Minneapolis classic, named the “Best Bar in America” by Esquire Magazine in 2006, Nye’s Polonaise brings you two spots for one. The lounge side has the old-school, Rat-Pack looking booths while the other side has the polka lounge. They’ll have live music on Thanksgiving, they’re always quiet with plenty of spots for reservations on Thanksgiving. Enjoy dinner the way your grandparents enjoyed a night out, at the classic and fun Nye’s Polonaise in Nordeast!
