university of minnesota2 U of M Mourns Deaths of Two Former Cheerleaders

The University of Minnesota is providing grief counselors to its cheerleaders following the deaths of two former cheerleaders in a traffic accident. 23 year-old Wilfredo Ugarte and 19 year-old Marcus Johnson were among three people killed when a drunk driver slammed into their disabled car on an interstate near Madison, Wisconsin early yesterday morning. Also killed was Marcus Johnson’s 20 year-old fiancee. Johnson had studied broadcasting at the U of M. He was a native of Milwaukee and his mother says Johnson was returning home for the weekend to join his sister for homecoming

. That driver is now in jail facing multiple charges. U of M Athletic Director Joel Maturi says the entire athletic department is “shocked” and calls the deaths a “senseless tragedy.”
