BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) — North Memorial Medical Center is honoring police officers, firefighters, paramedics and others who’ve gone above and beyond the call of duty.

North Memorial is presenting its annual Minnesota Public Safety Service Awards on Thursday in Brooklyn Center. It’s recognizing more than 30 people, including 14 from law enforcement and 16 civilians.

Among them will be Maplewood Police Sgt. Joseph Bergeron, who was responding to a carjacking when he was ambushed and killed in May.

North Memorial has been hosting the awards since 1984 for people who distinguish themselves through acts of dedication and heroism who might otherwise go unnoticed.
