MN Senator To Introduce Bill Banning Cell Use In Cars

By Susie Jones, NewsRadio 830 WCCO

ST. PAUL (WCCO) -- Some Twin Cities students are behind an effort to get cell phones banned while driving.

State Sen. Chuck Wiger, D-Maplewood, is sponsoring a bill that would make it illegal to talk on cell phones while driving. The ban would include bluetooth, hands-free phones.

Wiger said research shows that the chances of getting into an accident are 300 percent higher if the driver is using a cell phone.

He said people could use the cell phone in case of an emergency, but would be required to pull over.

Wiger understands there could be opposition to the bill from people who use their cell phones for business, but he said he expects support from law enforcement.

"I think cell phones are great for maximizing productivity but they need to be used responsibly," said Wiger.

Those caught talking on their cell phones would be given misdemeanor and fined $300.
