Fundraiser Held For Mpls. Girl Shot In The Neck

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO)
-- A community is coming together to help a young girl who was the victim of a terrible crime.

Guadalupe Galeno-Hernandez, 12, was shot in the neck in a drive-by shooting three months ago. She was walking with a group of friends in South Minneapolis when she was hit.

Now, Guadalupe will likely be paralyzed for the rest of her life.

On Saturday, a fundraiser was held at the All God's Children Metropolitan Community Church to help the family.

Traditional Mexican dancers showed off their skills and a clown entertained the crowd. However, with all this happiness, you could still see sadness in Hilda Galeno-Hernandez' eyes.

We asked Hilda how her daughter is doing.

"Guadalupe is sad and not doing too well, because she can't move her hands," she said, through an interpreter.

It's been a long two months for Guadalupe. At age 12, she says she dreams of a day when she can dance again.

The single mom of three wants that for her daughter, as well. But she told us it's been very hard and she's overwhelmed by the growing medical bills.

Some of the people here don't even know Guadalupe, but they wanted to come out and support the family in their time of need.

"I don't have to know to care, that it's someone in our community, a member of our neighborhood that this is happening to," said Janet Dahlem, who lives only two blocks from where Guadalupe was shot.

"While she's in the hospital trying to recover and trying to have a sense of life, we're here saying we're totally against violence in our community," said VJ Smith, the President of MADDADS.

Guadalupe may be able to get out of the hospital next month. The gunman still hasn't been caught. Crime stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward.

If you would like to help Guadalupe and her family, donations are being accepted at any M&I Bank location.
