Minnesota Man Pleads Guilty To $2M Tax Fraud

ST. PAUL (WCCO) -- A Minnesota man has pleaded guilty Tuesday for defrauding the IRS out of more than $2 million, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Robert Mahan Tiwari, who was charged on Dec. 27, 2010, could face up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of filing a false claim for a tax refund.

In his plea agreement, Tiwari admitted he filed a U.S. Individual Income Tax Return for himself on June 14, 2010, claiming a tax refund in the amount of $906,419, which he knew he was not entitled to. Also, he filed six additional tax returns for 2008 and 2009 under the names of other people. Those returns requested a combined refund of approximately $1.3 million.

Tiwari's sentencing date has yet to be scheduled.
