Could This Year Be The Worst Ever For Potholes?

By Esme Murphy, WCCO-TV

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota's state and local officials say this could be one of the worse years ever for potholes.

Metro district maintenance supervisor for MnDOT Bev Farraher says spring will likely result in many more potholes because of all the snow that has accumulated.

Farraher says that it appears so far that this year is far worse than last year at this time. She says that is in part because MnDOT has not had time to patch potholes because they have been so busy with snow removal.

Until it gets warm, the state and municipalities can only do temporary patches. The patches don't last long, so it will not be until spring when roads can get the permanent fix.

Jeff Stevens, the maintenance supervisor for St. Louis Park, says he is convinced the worse is yet to come this season.

"A lot of people don't want to hear this, but I am glad it's still cold outside," said Stevens. "Because when it warms up, the potholes are going to explode in a hurry."

He is even stockpiling pothole repair materials because he fears the materials could be in such demand supplies may run out.

"Everybody says you have a banner year, but I got a feeling this is going to be one of the top years we have had in a long time," said Stevens.
