High Snow Banks Pose Dangerous Threat To Drivers
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Now that we are back in the deep freeze, it means snow banks are still very high. That can be very dangerous for drivers. Crashes have been reported all across the metro because drivers simply can't see.
The stories are on a lot of street corners. In many cases this winter, those stories haven't ended well.
"You creep out there your nose is sticking out about an inch and -- slap -- it's over!" one driver told WCCO-TV.
It's not just the driver moving into traffic that's in danger. Two weeks ago, at the intersection of East Old Shakopee Road and East 88th Street in Bloomington a car veered over to make room for that creeping car.
Commander Mark Stehlik from Bloomington Police says a car tried to get out of the way.
"The driver veered a little too far and ended up colliding with oncoming traffic and we had some very serious injuries as a result of that," Stehlik said.
Hennepin County has been getting calls weekly: the snow piled so high drivers can't see. Crews will clear intersections, but can't handle complaints from homes and businesses.
The VanScoyk's found that out. WCCO-TV reported what happened when they drove off their Plymouth driveway onto a busy County Road 6. Last weekend, they were able to knock a couple of feet off their piles, still not enough to see very well.
So, drivers will have to wait for the only thing that will correct this corner story, which is spring weather.
Temperatures will start to creep over freezing come Friday. County crews hope you'll get out there with your shovel at that time.
