Wednesday's High Of 52 A Breath Of Fresh Air

By James Schugel, WCCO-TV

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's been 124 days since our first snow fall back in November, a long winter indeed, so Wednesday's high of 52 degrees was a breath of fresh air, a real treat for everyone craving spring.

A lot of people were outside soaking up the sun -- walking, running, you name it.

"It's kind of hard to resist on a day like today. It's nice," said Tiffany Caruthers.

Caruthers and other ice cream lovers stopped by Pumphouse Creamery in Minneapolis for some homemade ice cream, while outdoor lovers looked to Lake Calhoun for some warm weather enjoyment.

"The walking is great! The change of seasons will be here soon. We are Minnesota. We are ready to go," said Gary Hestness, who was walking around the lake Wednesday afternoon.

It's been a winter of records in the Twin Cities. It was Minnesota's seventh snowiest winter. We've gotten 80 inches of snow this season, which is a few feet more than we typically get.

Even so, some want winter to linger longer.

"I'm kind of sad it's going to be over," said snowboarder Shelly Peterson.

She and her pals know Hyland Ski and Snowboard Area will close in a few days. The snow is slushy and the season just about done.

"It's our spring break, so just come out for one last hurrah," said snowboarder Mikayla Nelson.

Soon, the snow on the slopes will melt, the buds will bloom all across the Twin Cities and spring will be here. It's something sweet many Minnesotans have been looking forward to after one of the toughest winters yet.
